Paul Merton: ‘I complained!’ BBC star addresses Have I Got News For You moment with bosses

Have I Got News For You star Paul Merton, 62, has been on the BBC show since its inception in 1990  Alongside Ian Hislop, 59, the duo regularly share their thoughts on the latest news reports alongside a variety of guests  But, ahead of the new series tonight, Paul admitted there was a particular segment he didn’t like  In an interview with Radio Times, he said: “It’s the first time in 29 years of the programme where stories won’t go away  “From my point of view, it’s just, ‘Please don’t ask me these questions anymore, just ask me something silly’  “In one episode there was footage of Kim Jong-un firing missiles into the air. “I complained about that, at least as much as I could ” But insisting things got better, he added: “Next week they gave me a story on a shortage of hummus in supermarkets That was so much better.” Paul went on to say he’d prefer to not discuss “hard news” and admitted he wouldn’t know about any new jokes regarding Donald Trump or Boris Johnson  “I don’t have political opinions, really. It’s not something that energises me,” he added  In an interview with Comedy.co.uk, Ian previously admitted the pair rely on the studio manager to keep them up to date with the latest news  He explained: “One of the problems we’ve had over the last couple of series is that the studio manager has to keep coming on to tell us what’s happening, because the news quite literally happens whilst we’re filming the show  “Someone resigns, a party changes its name or the leadership changes altogether. “It is unbelievably fast, so I’m really looking forward to trying to keep up with what’s going on ”  Read the full interview in Radio Times out now [RADIOTIMES] When asked who his dream MP guest would be on the show, he added: “I think it would be quite funny to get Jacob Rees-Mogg to come on and see if he wants to lie across two chairs  “And then we could have Boris [Johnson] on, and he could just lie.” Tonight, the veteran television duo will be joined my Martin Clumes on the show  Victoria Coren Mitchell has also been confirmed as the guest host for the late-night programme next week
