Hong Kong protests will get rougher: Former CIA official

STUART: DEMONSTRATION, CONFRONTATION CONTINUES. ASHLEY: YEAH. STUART: DENNIS WILDER, FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL DIRECTOR FOR CHINA, JOINS US ON THE PHONE. DENNIS YOU ARE IN HONG KONG, THAT CORRECT?>>NO. I’M IN WASHINGTON. STUART: I DO APOLOGIZE. I’M SORRY. MISTAKEN, MY FAULT. I’M SURPRISED TO SEE THIS. IT IS MIDDLE OF THE WEEK. IT IS AN UGLY CONFRONTATION. WE NORMALLY HAVE THIS ON THE WEEKENDS. WHAT SAY YOU? I WASN’T EXPECTING THIS?>>WELL I THINK WHAT YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT, STUART BEIJING MADE A DECISION AT THEIR SUMMER RETREAT, LEADERSHIP, WHAT THE DECISION IS USE THE HONG KONG POLICE IN MUCH MORE SERIOUS MATTER THAN BEFORE. THERE IS STARTING TO BE THE LITTLE GREEN MEN PROBLEM. IN OTHER WORDS, I THINK THEY HAVE TAKEN A PAGE OUT OF PUTIN’S BOOK, YOU’RE BEGINNING TO SEE PUBLIC SECURITY PERSONNEL FROM ACROSS THE BORDER IN HONG KONG. SO RATHER THAN MOVING IN WITH UNIFORMED PLA, OR THE PEOPLE’S ARMED POLICE THAT WE SEE AT THAT STADIUM ACROSS THE BORDER, I THINK BEIJING IS AUGMENTING THE HONG KONG POLICE FORCE WITH PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE BORDER AND IT IS GOING TO GET ROUGHER. STUART: NOW THE CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY NOW ADMITTED. YES, IT HAS DETAINED BRITISH CONSULAR OFFICIAL FROM HONG KONG, WHO WENT BY TRAIN INTO MAINLAND CHINA, THEN DISAPPEARED. NOW THEY ADMIT THAT THEY HAVE DETAINED HIM. DOESN’T THIS REALLY RAISE THE TENSION, RAISE THE STAKES BETWEEN BRITAIN, WHICH HANDED HONG KONG BACK TO CHINA 1997. THAT RAISES ANTE CONSIDEREDDABLY, DOESN’T IT?>>IT DOES. ALL BEING DONE AGAINST BRITISH COMPANIES AND AMERICAN COMPANIES, TO PRESSURE THEM IN HONG KONG RIGHT NOW, CATHAY PACIFIC PILOTS BEING TOLD TO HAND OVER THEIR PHONES WHEN THEY GET TO BEIJING. PEOPLE CAN LOOK TO SEE IF THEY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN ACTIVITIES. YOU HAVE SEEN THE MANAGEMENT OF CATHAY PACIFIC TURNED OVER BECAUSE OF THIS WHOLE THING. THERE IS A MULTIPRONGED APPROACH BEIJING HAS THAT IS VERY OBVIOUS. PRESSURE THE COMPANIES. PRESSURE THE TRADE UNIONS. PRESSURE THE HONG KONG POLICE TO DO MORE. THIS IS, THIS IS AN ALL-OUT CAMPAIGN NOW ACROSS THE BOARD IN HONG KONG. USE THE QUOTE, UNQUOTE, PATRIOTIC CITIZENS OF HONG KONG AGAINST THE STUDENTS. USE TWITTER, USE FACEBOOK. WE ARE SEEING AN ASSAULT ON HONG KONG NOW NOT WITH POLICE, I’M SORRY, NOT WITH TROOPS BUT WITH ALL OF THESE OTHER, SORT OF WAYS OF PUTTING THE HEAT ON AND YOU’RE GOING TO SEE THIS INCREASE. STUART: OKAY, WILL IT WORK? YOU’VE DESCRIBED VERY WELL THE INCREASING PRESSURE, QUIET PRESSURE ON EVERYONE, TRYING TO SQUASH THIS MOVEMENT QUIETLY. WILL IT WORK?>>I DON’T THINK SO BECAUSE 1.7 MILLION PEOPLE CAME OUT ON SUNDAY IN SUPPORT OF THIS MOVEMENT AND THAT IS A BIG PART OF SIX OR SEVEN MILLION PEOPLE OF HONG KONG. STUART: DENNIS, HOLD ON A SECOND. I JUST WANT TO ALERT OUR VIEWERS, WHAT IS ON YOUR SCREEN RIGHT NOW IS A LARGE FORCE OF RIOT POLICE MARCHING RAPIDLY THROUGH WHAT WE BELIEVE IS THE A SUBURBAN TRAIN STATION. THEY’RE PICKING UP THE PACE. THEY HAVE PRESS ALL OVER THEM. THERE ARE DEMONSTRATORS FOLLOWING THEM. THIS SQUAD LOOKS TO ME, 30, 40, 50 RIOT POLICE. THEY’RE IN THE SUBURBAN TRAIN STATION. I CAN HEAR SHOUTING BIG TIME. WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON I CANNOT SEE ON CAMERA AT THIS MOMENT BUT — ASHLEY: THEY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO REMOVE PROTESTERS HAVING A SIT-DOWN PROTEST AT THIS TRAIN STATION, THE SAME LOCATION ONE MONTH AGO WAS THE SCENE WHERE PROTESTERS WERE ATTACKED BY MASKED MEN. 45 OF THOSE PROTESTERS WERE INJURED, ONE CRITICALLY. THIS IS BASICALLY ACKNOWLEDGING, THIS HAPPENED ONE MONTH AGO, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT. STUART: DENNIS, YOU WOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS.>>SURE. STUART: BEARING IN MIND YOUR POSITION. HAS THERE BEEN CAPITAL FLIGHT FROM HONG KONG? IN OTHER WORDS, LOCAL PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS MONEY GETTING THAT MONEY OUT AS THE TENSION RISES?>>OH I THINK PEOPLE ARE MAKING THOSE CONTINGENCY PLANS. THEY MAY NOT HAVE MOVED IT YET, THEY MAY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT. I THINK FOREIGN COMPANIES ARE BEGINNING TO SERIOUSLY RECONSIDER THEIR POSITIONS IN HONG KONG BECAUSE OF THIS KIND OF PRESSURE, BECAUSE SOME OF WHAT BEIJING IS ASKING THEM TO DO IS PRETTY UNTENABLE. FOR EXAMPLE, FIRING EMPLOYEES, SIMPLY FOR JOINING THE DEMONSTRATIONS. SO I THINK BEIJING IS IN DANGERING THEIR POSITION IN HONG KONG RIGHT NOW, THROUGH THIS VERY HEAVY-HANDED SET OF TACTICS THEY’RE USING. STUART: I DON’T SEE MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COLD WAR BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION AND WHAT SEEMS TO BE A DEVELOPING NEW COLD WAR BETWEEN AMERICA AND CHINA. AM I GOING TOO FAR?>>I THINK IT IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF STRUGGLE. IT ISN’T INVOLVING MASSIVE NUMBERS ABOUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS. IT IS NO QUESTION, WE ARE IN A IF YOU WILL, A COLD WAR. WHAT WE’RE SEEING IN HONG KONG IS THE CHINESE VALUE SYSTEM, VERY, VERY DIFFERENT FROM OUR VALUE SYSTEM. AND IT IS BECOMING VERY OBVIOUS. FRANKLY, PRETTY UGLY. AND SO I THINK THAT BEIJING IS REVEALING SOME OF ITS TRUE COLORS, BEING XI XINPING GOVERNMENT RIGHT NOW. IT IS GOING TO INCREASE TENSION, AGGRAVATION, THE FACT THAT THE PRESIDENT DID COME OUT ON SUNDAY WITH A STRONG STATEMENT ABOUT HONG KONG SHOWS THAT THIS ISSUE IS MOVING THE AMERICAN SYSTEM A BIT. SO YES, I THINK, WE’RE HEADED TO ROUGHER GROUND IN THE U.S. RELATIONSHIP. STUART: DENNIS, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT.

Isn’t it a pretty big PROVOCATION that these protestors have smashed up, broken into a PARLIAMENT BUILDING and raised a BRITISH flag inside HK’s parliament which is part of China? This becomes a FOREIGN SPONSORED PROVOCATION and China are right to be very angry about it. If someone broke into the Parliament building in the UK, trashed the building and raised the RUSSIAN FLAG, there’ll be all kinds of INTERNATIONAL OUTCRY and trouble about it. But of course, we CAN’T even send a CAMERA CREW to France to the Yellow vest protests of violence taking place in our closest neighbour. But we've got a very great deal of interest here and what's happening all the way in Hong Kong in China.

  • Emily Sophia

These protesters in this UNLAWFUL BREAKING IN and occupation of the GOVERNMENT BUILDING would have been labeled as RIOTERS and be treated as such had HK still been under the British rule.

  • Emily Sophia

The protesters CLAIMED China could FORCEFULLY DETAIN any (innocent) person without legal due process. WHERE’S THE PROOF? Canada’s been asked to extradite a NON-Canadian, INNOCENT Huawei’s CEO to the US. Isn’t FOREIGN FORCES instigate the RIOT for no other purpose than to poke China in the eye? The proposed extradition law is NO DIFFERENT than the ones between the US and all of its FIVE EYES.

  • Emily Sophia

The protesters FEAR China could FORCEFULLY DETAIN any (innocent) person without legal due process. WHERE’S THE PROOF? It’s like when someone says “I’m scared of crossing the road because a car MAY hit me”. Yes, people MAY or MAY NOT get hit by a car when crossing the road. Isn’t it a HYPOTHESIS made on the basis for reasoning WITHOUT any evidence and on assumption of its truth?

  • Emily Sophia

Protesters have EVERY RIGHT to DAMAGE and BLOCK public places to protest against a law that PROTECT law-abiding citizens and EXTRADITE CRIMINALS. But law-abiding citizens have NO right to enjoy their life and commute to work and to school. Do Hongkongers trying to say they have every right to HARBOUR CRIMINALS whether they’re Chinese or Canadians?

  • Emily Sophia

HK done well between 1970 and 1997, it was HK got LUCKY and because of CHINA and the role that CHINA was performing. And it WASN’T that HK were very smart, free or with the British.

  • Emily Sophia

It’s BRITISH HYPOCRISY, Britain ran HK for 155 years and there was NO democracy, NO right to vote for all HK citizens. British imposed EVERY LAW and Official on HK WITHOUT asking anyone in HK. What the QUEEN and the UK PARLIAMENT wanted was the law. Only AFTER the handover in 1997 with Chinese rule looming, THEN it became essential that HK was DEMOCRATIC IN WESTERN STYLE FASHION.

  • Emily Sophia

One country two systems were a BRILLIANT SOLUTION to the create a more unified country.
After the handover, Hong Kong DIDN’T change much and it just carried on in the OLD FORM OF GOVERNMENT. But there were TWO BIG PROBLEMS. HK is a COLONIAL GOVERNMENT. It's a kind of executive. There's NO political sense of direction set by a colonial administration because ALL DECISIONS were made in ENGLAND in those days. The second problem is HK is a COLONIAL ECONOMY. It’s not a competitive economy, it's a MONOPOLISTIC ECONOMY. It preferred or empowered the TYCOONS and the BANKS to run HK to divide up their PROFITS between themselves in the field of PROPERTY where most of the money was made.

  • Emily Sophia

The Chinese government needs to BREAK the situation in HK to allow HK to go forward. China needs to CHANGE those two situations to have a DIFFERENT sort of ADMINISTRATION and to have a DIFFERENT kind of ECONOMY which is more open. Compare the FORTUNES of HK with Shenzhen, China. Deng Xiaoping, former Chinese president deliberately suggested the IDEA of Shenzhen, China just over the border a little fishing port so it was close to HK and could model itself and learn some of HK's lessons. Now compare the situation of HK today with where Shenzhen, China today. Shenzhen, China has absolutely ELECTRIFYING progress. It’s the TECHNOLOGICAL CENTRE of China, it’s the SECOND only to Silicon Valley in it’s TECHNICAL COMPETENCE AND INNOVATION. And HK? It has made ZERO progress in this direction.

  • Emily Sophia

HK should press the Chinese government for MORE RAPID INTEGRATION into China's own plans.
HK needs to think of itself MORE than just being PART FROM CHINA. But HK’s mentality is we're DIFFERENT, we're NOT Chinese. Of course, for 155 years, HK NEVER learned anything about China. They speak Cantonese but they DIDN'T know anything really about China. Their lines of vision were all to WEST and NEVER to China.

  • Emily Sophia

The US and the British STOLE HK from China during the opium war in 1842. British imposed OPIUM on the Chinese population essentially DRUGGING an ENTIRE nation including CHILDREN for PROFIT. The protest DOESN’T come from the HK people. 37,000 NGOs, the political parties, the media and the universities are all funded from the WEST to instigate RIOTS for no other purpose than to poke China in the eye. The Key of the problem is WHERE are the protests coming from and WHAT are the demands that they're raising it's all AGAINST CHINA and NOT against the BANKS that run HK.

Be like water. Be like Mao Zedong and adopt the strategic methods that Mao used to attack his government of the day. Mao attacked the then Nationalist govt very violently and in the end he won. China worships Mao. So if the Hong Kong protesters do like Mao, China will also worship them! Power to the HK people!

  • Born Dragon

We are seeing an assault on Hong Kong instigated by CIA, per collusion with a local political minority. Majority in Hong Kong do not support the protests and some call them cockroaches which you smash with your slipper in kitchen! Organisers claimed 1.7 million, while organisers before the event had stated only 100,000 would fit in Victoria Park!! Police put the official number at 128,000. I am a Westerner and view America should butt out because America is complete WRONG in this. Hong Kong is and will be China.

All these braindead Yankee morons who think that the Second Amendment would help them are truly BRAINDEAD !
Ask the gun owners who have their firearms seized by their military after Hurricane Katrina !

  • Edward Ong

These HK protesters are the pests in Hong Kong, destroying and damaging public properties. Look at the damage and vandalism done by them. Guess HK Police is the only country which can have so much patience after all the damages, unrests, rioting and public disturbances created by these protesters. US and UK are the culprits and instigators of these protesters …..

  • The Observer

The CPC, specifically Dictator Chairman Xi and the MSS, are planning on using the same methods as what the Russian GRU and FSB did in Crimea… "volunteers"…

By the way, the FSB and MSS use a book/pdf: American Accent Training. The Russian FSB distributes such in Russia and provides such to the MSS. They use the book to train their agents in accents, culture, and foreign espionage. An extensive and through training book/pdf it is…

Hong Kongers know that a lot of BeiJingers and a lot of Mainlanders do not have it easy when speaking in Cantonese, specifically, of the Hong Kong accent/dialect. As regards to patriotic, what the CPC is saying about that: If you love the CPC.

To the CPC, and specifically to Dictator Chairman Xi: You interfered, interfere, conjured and conjure up lies, you deny people freedom, and you force people, including the at the top in the CPC to praise you. China is not the issue. You are the issue. You are a stain to the CPC, as you aren't a Communist, you are an Emperor…

To Hong Kongers and TaiWanese, as well as to Mainlanders: Chairman Xi is destroying faith, freedom of speech, and international obligations. He is doing such to secure power. Opposition leaders and those within the Party, you know Chairman Xi is a dictator. He doesn't have true power. You entrusted power to him, and now he is using such to silence you as much as possible. Look within.

The protest will get rougher because Mainland China is completely running out of patient an tolerance on democracy so extreme violence is their tool on Hong Kong protest.

  • John Sketcher

Hong Kong is doomed. Historically, Chinese police and military have had no compunctions about shooting on their own people. Afterwards the event will be swept under the carpet like it was a minor skirmish held by disloyal citizens. Tienanmen square is forgotten. Nothing to see here.I'm sure the mainland Chinese people know nothing about what's happening in this city. Hong Kong is isolated and can easily be cut off from the rest of the world. The airports, seaports, rail-lines and highways can be closed in an instant and the city will be starved into submission. Food, energy, and other resources will run out and the people in Hong Kong will beg the mainland for mercy. The tanks will roll in, a few stalwarts will get shot, the rest of the people will abandon the protest. All the protesters will be handed over to the Communist government and will never be seen again. It will be a footnote in the pages of history.

  • joey smith

All mainland Chinese people must rise and stand with Hong Kong's people. The corrupt evil communist one party system must be replaced with freedom and democracy. Evil communist party must be replaced.

  • Bama Sux

The HK freedom fighters really wish they had our Second Amendment, and our AR15 rifles and 30 round mags- because they're tools of anti-Fascism.

  • Satrio Jumeneng

Super stupid Hong Kong-ers don't realize that they are being fooled by foreign provocateur to turn Hong Kong into disaster area.

  • d'joy S

China has horrible human rites track. Tiananmen is still fresh and china ready for Tiananmen 2.0 . Horrible. HK will be another feather in deadly communist cap.

  • Bud Suwardi

I agree with the views… the protesters are going to get rougher…. And I am sure that PLA will come in to reins in the protesters hard… good luck to the protesters…

  • KT Chong

Those HK rioters or terrorists — as can be seen from the way they behave — just like the ISIS, cover up all their faces hopefully not to be identified. Which is to say, if they are peaceful protesters, why must they cover up their faces like ISIS?

  • KT Chong

The rioters in HK are Vietnamese, they are not Chinese. Why the Vietnamese hate China, but love USA? It's because The Viets defeated USA in Vietnam war. After defeated USA, the Viets thought they were the mighty of all mightys, so they tried to bully China. But to their disappoinments, China defeated the Viets in the Sino Vietnam war. Thats why the Viets hate China very much, and they love Americans because USA is a good loser. So now they tried every now and then to disturb or disrupt China, of course, with the cooperation of the USA.

  • jim kuan

It is quite obvious that CIA instigates this HK riot and supports it with financial means. Protest against an Extradition Law that is quite common across the globe? What is a more lame excuse. And why did it lead further and further in chaos and riots? It is more a heavy handed US institutional engagement than a "simple" and "heartful" local movement. HK is the one of the freest cities with the best police and civic servants on this planet earth. Yet as long as you can buy your "riot" act for some time, you can actually spin it in any direction you want.

So CIA runs the riot, and News spins the riot. You have yet another Color Revolution. All is missing is setting up some fatally tragic accidents to ignite the situation and get to a "tougher" state in HK. Perfect operations played by the book.

  • Khang Mac

American have not seen what these protester do to Hong Kong , Fox News will not show the dark side of CIA agent
Violent , groping , anything you can think of and call this democracy ! Shame to USA

  • Janice Chan
