Defense News Minute August 2, 2018

THIS IS THE DEFENSE NEWS MINUTE
FOR AUGUST 2, 2018. I’M JILLL AITORO. THE U-S AIR FORCE IS
LOOKING TO REPLACE THREE AIRCRAFT WITH A SINGLE PROGRAM
KNOWN AS N-E-A-T OR NEAT. AIR FORCE MATERIEL COMMAND POSTED A
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION TUESDAY FOR THE PLATFORM, WHICH WOULD
REPLACE THEIR E-4-B COMMAND POST, THE C-32-A EXECUTIVE
AIRLIFTER AND THE NAVY’S E-6-B COMMAND POST. THE R-F-I SAYS THE
PENTAGON IS LOOKING INTO A COMMON PLATFORM THAT DOES NOT
SACRIFICE OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS OR INCREASE THE
OVERALL COST. FRANCE IS LOOKING TO BREAK FREE FROM THEIR
RELIANCE ON U-S APPROVAL FOR FRENCH ARMS EXPORTS. THE U-S IS
CURRENTLY WITHHOLDING CLEARANCE FOR AN AMERICAN COMPONENT FOR
THE FRENCH SCALP CRUISE MISSILE, BLOCKING FRANCE’S SALE OF RAFALE
FIGHTER JETS TO EGYPT. THE FRENCH ARMED FORCES MINISTER
SAID THEY WOULD LIKE TO CONTRACT DIRECTLY WITH MISSILE
MANUFACTURERS TO MAKE A SIMILAR COMPONENT, WHICH WOULD AVOID THE
U-S’ APPROVAL. ACCORDING TO AN ANONYMOUS SOURCE, FRENCH
PRESIDENT EMMANUEL MACRON SPOKE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP IN APRIL
ABOUT CLEARING THE COMPONENT FOR THE MISSILE, BUT THE ISSUE HAS
NOT YET BEEN RESOLVED. THANKS FOR WATCHING THIS DEFENSE NEWS
MINUTE AND GET MORE CONTENT AT DEFENSE NEWS DOT COM.
